Hey Owl Fans,
As many of you know there is a strong movement from FAU fans to order and distribute as many "lil red shovels" before the MTSU game as we can. Please check out Ted's blog on the SunSentinel web site. We have some financial support already, a contact point on where to order the shovels, and some of us are donating our time as well.
Im not even sure how its going to get coordinated, but I think there is some determination to MAKE this happen.
Please if you can donate and lets make a statement to the BOT, and actually more importantly the PLAYERS and COACH how much we care about having football played on FAU's home campus.
LETS GO OWLS!

I pinned this to the top of the page, since it seems to be a hot topic and time sensitive matter.
I do think that we could easily get a couple of boosters and current sponsors behind on this as well. We all know that the BoT met in early Sept., so this could be a big statement if enoung shovels are distributed.

Is this supposed to be more of an anti-BOT thing, or the start of a new 'bury our opponents" thing? I'm confused...as usual. Either way, it's not a bad idea. Surely we could get some company to sponsor them so we get these things for free.

It is supposed to show support for the new stadium. If we can bury some opponents along the way that would be an added bonus.
GO OWLS!!!

Ted's blog presents it as a more long term "tradition"...IMO a good one..."Bury the Burrow"..."Bury the competition" in football...and of course the stadium support...
would be pretty cool to get a real shovel done up right with like some gold or bornze trim, etc to engrave FIU games we win, and or other hot rivalries as they develop...someone could run out to center court, and of the center of the grid iron and wave it, etc...much like other teams do in similar fashion - ie the FSU seminole and his spear...
i think it could go long term if folks got on board...not a bad idea...
some folks on the blog have committed (in pledges) what appears to be $400 in cash towards a bulk buy...they also want to take out an ad in the Sun Sentinel (half page)...thats NOT CHEAP...its actually quiite costly...perhaps Ted would do an article if there is enough "hype" about it and save that cost entirely...
i e-mailed Dexter Lamont a wek or so ago (but got no response) to inform him about the "movement" of the Red Shovel brigade...
whoever ends up "heading" this up should inquire to Pespsico about sponsoring the whole thing...
the other (an official shovel) could be done by a Spirit Club or Frat or the like...

Perhaps someone with ties to the alumni association can check and see if they would like to get involved. They always have tailgates and stuff before the games. If it is cheap enough to get the shovels, maybe they would be interested in sponsoring them. I'm sure they are always looking for ways to get the alumni involved. Just an idea.

The original concept was to have FAU fans show thier displeasure at the dragging of the feet for the Stadium, and that is still its primary goal. NOW I would LOVE for it to morph into a true tradition in the sense that Ted is discussing. If that happens so much the better. The concept has its merits in the "bury the competition" sense. Thats the great thing about college sports, all the quirky lil things that are started and keep rollilng even if the orginial mean was lost. Thanks for the sticky Bytor. I belive there is a Yahoo page setup by a person to help coordinate this. groups.yahoo.com/group/fauredshovel Thanks for everyones support and comments. Lets make this happen.

I am much more on board with the red shovel as a "bury the competition" movement and becoming a tradition.
My concern was when it was presented as a statement to the BOT for a stadium. The statement the BOT wants to hear is simple: 24,000 season ticket holders. A couple thousand people parading around with shovels was going to send the message that only a couple thousand people want a stadium.
Go Owls!!! Bury the competition!!!

Use it now for the BOT and later get some decals like "XXX" or Skull and Crossbones. and stick them on the shovel. So you go from displeasure with the stadium issues to Bury the Competition. Just a thought on how to kill to birds with one stone.

Actually after going back and reading all the blogs, I think the original thought was two fold. One to show the BOT the fans displeasure about the Stadium Fiasco, but secondly and more importantly, it was to show the Players and Coaches we understood their plight and we had their backs. A show of public support, they need to know that it's being acknowledged as a major set back/problem. And yes, we do not like it ! Almost all, if not all the points made for the effort were, also confirmed by Ted @ Sun Sentinel.
All that being said we are 100% for the Red Shovel Drive, as well as bringing a new fan to the game.
Give a Hoot ! Support the Shovel and let's fill the Stands.
