D-Owl , I know you have poured your heart and soul in to this thing and can't thank you enough for your efforts. I know when we spoke it seemed an incredible task because of the blockades you had to run but damn you got it done. We really need to have everybody get on board with this. Parents of players read this board and they need to tell other parents and friends to be a part of this. A couple bucks to be a part of a history making effort is not much to ask. It will also confidence to donors that this is a living breathing thing that can happen and will.
Again D-Owl thank you for all the work you have put into this project. ;D

Good work D-Owl!!!
What it sounds like is FAU has turned into a bureaucratic nightmare.

Great job, D-Owl!!!
Not to defend the administration (I have donated to the shovel fund) but look at it from their perspective...
Any "outside" projects could impact donations they may receive for the athletics department. For example, if I donate $100 to the shovel movement, that may be $100 that I may have donated to Athletics but now I may not.
If someone else comes up with another idea, should FAU embrace it?
They have to have some sense of control of the money and I can see their point. They cannot help drive every single idea. They are in as much of a tough situation as D-Owl was in. Everyone wants to do the right thing and as long as everyone involved has the best interests of FAU in mind, then it's all good!
Thanks again.

I don't agree with you at all fauowl this isn't an "outside" project this is one for getting attention to "The Stadium" that we so desperately need at this university.
"If" is what the BOT has been doing for five years. If it is a worthy cause donate to it, and if another one comes along and its a worthy cause and you want to donate to it then donate. If you sit around trying to decide where your one hundred dollar is going then you will probably never make that decision.
As far as fund raising if they can only handle one cause at a time they better go find somebody that can multitask. At my sons high school we had four different fund raisers just for the football program two years ago and met every goal.
D-Owl situation was constraints put on him and the lack of support from Athletics it had nothing to do with his ability to coordinate a fund raiser. I believe he could probably run six or seven at one time himself.
The Administration has a lack of support from donors because of the crap that has happened with corvette's and severance pays and etc..

I may be way off base here but I don't think the BoT has ever had to deal with disgruntled alumni as a large group before. Look at the history and currently. The alumns graduate and disappear. They won't come to sporting events even though there are 50K+ living in the 2 county area. It wasn't until this message board and blogs like the SS and PBP that the alumni rallied. We sent in our emails last year to the board pushing for the dome. I don't think this ever happened before at FAU.
The athletics have given us something to rally around. Prior to this, NADA.
Hopefully as a group we will continue to grow in numbers and clout. The BoT has been fairly autonomous up till now only answering to Tallahassee. Now they have alumni and boosters to contend with.
If they want $ from us, they're going to have to get away from the bureaucratic B.S. and make some better decisions for FAU's future.

Congratulations FAU!! We at Arkansas State have some "payback" planned with MTSU as well! Thanks! Regarding thre Blue Shovel... I didn't see D-Owl before the game although I got there a little late. I did he see him hold up his (large) shovel after a key victory but that was the only one I saw. They (Athletics?) were giving out these free "Owl Towels" and people were swinging those above their head. The blue shovel movement is not a lost cause by any means but for this particular game, it wasn't represented well. Speaking of blue, most students who attended the game wore red. I guess the whole red vs. blue hasn't trickled down to most of the fans just yet. And it's probably for the best in this game when wearing blue might have been confusing considering that our opponent was the "Blue Raiders".

I did get a chance to talk to D-Owl breifly before the game & the distributors could not get the shovel here in time - wanted to charge an enormous amount for express delivery.
In his defense, there just wasn't enough time to collect the money needed, checks where received within a two week period, & then ordering the shovels. Hopefully, something can be done for the next game at Lockhart.

I also talked to D-Owl and he has been fighting an up hill battle. He was very upset with the supplier and rightful so. As Bytor said they wanted to express the shovels for an astronomical amount. I believe the Athletic Department was more in tuned to having them for the USF game so that takes a little pressure off the "D". We need to continue support this effort anyway we can. He's has been pretty much alone on this for the most part and from a distance doesn't make it any easier. D-Owl is a very high spirited guy that wants the absolute best for this program. If you need help passing out the shovels prior to the shovel game day count me in.

I believe the Athletic Department was moore in tuned to having them for the USF game so that takes a little pressure off the "D". I also think they'd be better to have for the USF game. There are going to be a lot of people there and anything else we can have to raise spirit will definitely help.

First things first, great game plan coach and great execution by the players. They went out and did what they had to do, and that was to WIN the first game, a Sun Belt Conference game. Great going Owls, beating one of the two defending Sun Belt Conference Co-Champs, one more to go, and we just might be up in New Orleans this December. More on that later on.
Now for the not so good news. As I am sure you all have heard by now, are vendor did not deliver our shovels to us as per our sales agreement. We had contacted "Century Novelty" out of Michigan, and dealt directly with it's Vice President and General manager (same person), and purchased 2000 shovels on 8/21 @ 3:16 PM. When the order was made and paid for by the FAU Athletic Department, it was confirmed that we would receive our 2000 shovels by 8/31 at the latest. Shortly after the sales agreement was made, I received a call from the V.P. & G.M., and he confirmed the order was in and that our shovels would ship out in 7 days, 8/27 (Monday), or 8/28 (Tuesday) which would be 8 days. As this would allow for the normal 3 day ground shipping, giving us our shovels by 8/30 or 8/31 at the latest. I even called on Friday 8/24 and was told that everything was fine as "Ian" (V.P.& G.M.) was handling our sale personally. So I advised everyone in Owl Country that we were on for 9/1. When I checked on the status of our order on Tuesday (8/28) and was advised that our order had not shipped yet, I requested a call from "Ian" and he advised that he would have to check into it. On 8/28 @ about 1:30 PM. I received this e-mail from "Ian".
"Hello Ed,
I am following up to the calls you've had with Customer Service. I apologize I didn't follow up with your earlier; the only contact information I saved for this order was what Melissa Dawson provided when she placed it.
As previously indicated, your order was going to take a week to ship (that would mean shipping around 8/28). We currently estimate the merchandise to be ready to ship tomorrow or Thursday. Per your request, here is the shipping price necessary for delivery by Saturday.
If shipping on Wednesday, we need to use 2 Day Air $804.44 If shipping on Thursday, we need to use Next Day Air Saver $1227.38
Alternatively, we could use Standard Ground (takes 3 business days) $127.12, but that wouldn't arrive until Monday or Tuesday.
Ian MacDonald Vice President & General Manager"
Needless to say I was very upset to put it nicely. He had no real answers as to what happened. He was advised from the very beginning about our time frame, and assured me that as the V.P. he would make sure that everything went smoothly. Well as everyone can see he admitted in his e-mail that he did not save my/our info, and thus seemingly forgot about our order and the time frame involved. He was not even sure at that time when the order would be shipped. I advised him that we had committed to 9/1 and that it was already announced and that he needed to do whatever he had to to get us the shovels by 8/31. He wanted me to agree to splitting the next day cost at 1,227.38. I advised him that there was no way I was going to pay more than the original $127.12 for the normal 3 day shipping, and that it was his screw up and he needed to make it right. He was to get back to me. The next day Wednesday (8/29) I was told that he took it upon himself to cancel our order, as he was attempting to walk away from this mess he made. I requested the Presidents info from "Ian" as well as their customer service department, but they would not cooperate any longer. I advised we had better receive the shovels by 8/31, as per the terms of the sale. So I/we had to wait & see what he/they did. Well they did nothing, they advised that our purchase would be refunded. So at this time we should still have all our funds available to us.
So now we have to regroup and shoot for the USF game as I/we need to go to another vendor. I have a new understanding of some of the crap that the Athletic Department must deal with. Hey is there anybody out there (maybe an Alumni), who happens to be an attorney ? Who can help us bring this company to it's knees ? I hope we are not the only one's who get bent over here. Surely we have a cause of action here.
We did not get the tent/table at Rally Alley as we had no shovels to hand out, but I did get a chance to talk to several people in the "Shovel Movement" as well as a couple of our contributors about this, and everyone wants to get set up for the USF game. I am looking for any and all ideas, or input from all out there in Owl Country ! Do not be shy, I/we need your help now more than ever. I will have another post later on today as I have had a very long weekend, and it's getting very late. On the way back from South Florida I had a bolt sheer off in the engine and my "Labor Day" plans changed drastically. I'll be looking for your suggestions, send me an e-mail at thefaushovelyahoo.com or here on Mr. Teds Blog.
We must not give up on this now, as we have come to far to crumble due to other's false promises/assurances. As we tell our kids, and our players. Fight for what you want, what you believe in. "Lets Go Owl Country" it's time to unite, and fight for our rights.

boy, that free towel at the game with the pepsi logo was the bomb!
NOT...im dumbfounded that we couldnt get some SHOVELS paid for by pepsi, (an item that has long term vestage positioned behind it) but they would gladly pony up for the likes of a cheap sweat rag that ends up on the grandstand floor at games end...
someone didnt present the idea to them obviously...but they did affirm that pesi wouldnt go for it...now how does that work again??
