Check this out -- The Owl Book -- mailed to all the new freshman. It's a way of introducing the incoming class to FAU culture, traditions, and points of pride. Produced by the Student Alumni Board, this is the first year they've done this and they're going to continue to do it every Fall. It's a really great little book. Cover Introduction from Brogan Then there are 11 pages of alumni names and profiles, which next year will be in the back... then it goes into the Traditions section (our Alma Mater text is TERRIBLE): the why and the what: an incomprehensible diagram of the alumni center: and finally, it ends with talk about the stadium: The images have to be this large in order for you to read the text (sorry) Anybody else notice (perhaps I've pointed this out before) that the yellow dorms in that diagram above the stadium look like a bird with it's wings outstretched? I love it. I hope they go with that model.

The fact they are promoting the innovation village and stadium sort of locks it in. They can't promote this to students and potential students all over the state and country and not follow through with it. I'm sure booklet had board approval.
The PrOWLers really made a name for themselves. Their pictures are all over the place. Billboards, posters, this booklet, FAU website.

Excellent idea and it looks good.
I am so happy to give credit to FAU for once (or twice). Nice job!

Thank you so much for the comments on the book. The idea from the book came from the prOWLers, Student Alumni Association, Student Ambassadors (all under the umbrella Student Alumni Board) trip to Kentucky in February. It was our regional conference. U of Florida does something like this called the "F" book. We only had five months to throw this together. Paul Metcalf, who works in Alumni Relations and is the adviser for the before mentioned clubs, is the FAU staff member that made this idea into a reality. He gathered almost all of the information together, pictures, etc. Of course, he had help from other people and departments.
Through the first edit of the book, I added about 20 pages of traditions and lost traditions. For example, I explained that Homecoming was for basketball before football came along. I also explained that block painting was a lost tradition and since has been replaced by boring sidewalks and grass. Because of the time crunch, we didn't get any of those changes made.
Look for a BIGGER and BETTER Owl Book next year.THIS IS HOW WE START TRADITION. In my words... "you have to know the history of tradition before making a new one."

How about putting the book on the Web in PDF format? Then you can make the changes and additions as they are needed and e-mail those who would be interested.

I think they're missing a couple of logos, but I don't know where I would find them.
I love that second logo from the top...they should make some retro t-shirts with that logo on them.

Well, the idea is to give the freshman something physical to hold instead of directing them to their 1000th website. but what about those of us who havent been a freshmen in over 3 years? I understand you wanted to see it and I wanted to see it too -- I'm not a freshman either. I just happened to get one from someone and I thought I should show it to you guys. I'm not in charge of them -- according to the book, the Student Alumni Board is. My understanding is that, at the other colleges that do this, these books are made and laid on the beds of freshmen dorms so when they move in, it's a gift that welcomes them to the cultures and traditions of their new college. Having been students for a couple of years, the SAB wouldn't produce it for you because you should (theoretically) already know everything in there. Again, don't shoot the messenger. I'm speculating but I think I understand why they're doing this.

Great idea. I suggested the PDF version because it could be updated as needed (saving time and trouble on deadline) and could be seen by those interested in FAU year-round - including prospective students and parents. And it would cost nothing to put online.

Someone please let the university know there are type-os on that page before the whole world sees it. From the website: GO OWLS! This unique booklet is brought to you by the Student Alumni Board (SAB). The SAB is a multidimensional club at FAU that plays a crucial role in the life of our University . It is designed to inform fellow students how they can become a part of the traditions that make up this diverse institurion. Mainly, the SAB helps connect current students with FAU alumni, donors, staff and the surrounding community through various programs, providing new students with an understanding of what ist means to be part of the broader FAU family.
