Breakout the Shovel it's a ground breaking at FAU ! Oh, it's not the stadium, but it's OK. The Shovel can be there as it has nothing breaking at the moment ! lol !

Hummm...who says it's not all connected. Could break ground around the same time (Nov. 2007). Near the same area, off Lee St. and the breezeway. besides, and more importantly, anything that improves the students college experience is a good thing.

I really hope they change the name of "Lee Street" to "Stadium Way" or something similar once the stadium is built. I doubt they'll have the much imagination though. I don't even know how difficult it would be to change the name of a street.

I love FAU and everything they want to accomplish but that picture looks awful. That's not a rec center its a freaking jail. 11 million? that thing looks like crap. why can't they build a two story gym with a windowed front that looks out onto the campus, or even north.
That is hands down the ugliest building. I don't know what they're thinking. get back to the drawing board.

It's like they are really hung on box design. You can't tell me that nobody can come up with something a little more creative. Look at some of the club houses around Boca. Another thing missing is a swimming pool that would really add to the whole rec theme and don't forget the Owl Logo on the bottom.

It's like they are really hung on box design. You can't tell me that nobody can come up with something a little more creative. Look at some of the club houses around Boca. I've had the same problem with FAU's designs forever. I've been told over and over that it's simply a cost-cutting measure. Apaprently Eric Hawkes, head of Campus Rec, originally included a lot of curves and visual "oomph" to make this new Rec Center stand out. The university architects, looking at budgets, said to cut out this and this and this and the end result is, well, that. Something about curves... expensive to do. I don't understand it... especially considering the huge round atrium in the barely-used College of Nursing building. Hopefully in the coming years parents and students will write more and more letters saying, effectively, your pink boxy designs are unappealing and sometimes even embarassing. If they don't think there's going to be a public outlash to it, they'll keep doing it. And we'll all be in boxes. Another thing missing is a swimming pool that would really add to the whole rec theme and don't forget the Owl Logo on the bottom. A pool has always been considered for Phase 2, which is currently unfunded. Originally it was a lap pool (like we need another one of those) and recently it's been more like a leisure pool. I think they've been looking at UCF's pool. But again, no money means you can dream up all the pools you want. I agree that it needs to have an Owl head logo on the bottom. But those decorative items are always the first to go when designs need to come back to earth, budget-wise.

My guess is that this is a "Tilt-Up" building based on it's design. They are very inexpensive and quick to build, it's a money thing as usual.

Its kind of ironic that in a city that prides itself on its architecture and wealth, FAU is putting up cheap unattractive buildings.

Angelos has nothing to do with the Rec Center. That isn't a Athletic Department project.

Angelos has nothing to do with the Rec Center. That isn't a Athletic Department project. That's true. It's Campus Rec. Although he Can forward it to Eric Hawkes. All we ever send to Angelos anymore are disappointing emails about why this or that isn't the way we want it. I wouldn't be surprised if he stops answering it altogether. It's depressing.
