Hooray for red, white and blue

Not one to miss a great opportunity to spread the word about FAU football, coach Howard Schnellenberger and the Owls will take advantage of the largest crowd of the year for any event on FAU’s campus. It’s the annual Fourth of July “Fabulous Fourth” at FAU. It’s been estimated some 50,000 people are on campus for the fireworks show, which is, of course, free. Listen for a loud whistle (more of a Schnellenberger trademark than his famous pipe) around 7:30 p.m. when he will address the crowd.
One thing I find interesting is that the number of people who will be on campus today is much larger than any crowds expected for FAU football games once they are to be played on campus. But from what I hear, traffic flows pretty well for this event. While there are obviously some bottlenecks, the large scale traffic nightmares that some claim will cripple the city of Boca Raton on game days don’t materialize at this event even though many make their only trip of the year to FAU on this day. The news isn’t all good for the Owls. This article claims we’ll probably lose a couple of the Burrowing Owls - the real ones - at today’s event.
