UCF has entered a similar agreement to ours -- building retail/housing to support the construction of athletic facilities -- but for some reason, they're getting a bigger football stadium (45k seats) AND a 10k seat Convocation Center IN THE SAME YEAR.
I understand that costs are different in Orlando and Boca, but really, are they THAT different that we couldn't build both now? Can someone please explain how our deal is different than theirs, why we're not doing the same thing?
It just feels like we're getting the short end of the stick here and I'm tired of losing out to UCF on facilities and amenities.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the UCF stadium will be more of an erector set type of stadium and not steel reinforced concrete like I believe the FAU stadium will be.

The real issue is that we do not attract enough fans to the football games. If we had been selling out games, our stadium would already be up. It's supply and demand. Then the argument becomes, "well, if we had an on campus stadium, everyone would go to the games." We had the opportunity to prove that during basketball season and did not. They will never build a basketball stadium for 1000 fans. We need fan support!

It is an erector set (same as FSU; nothing wrong with that).
The costs are not different up there.
UCF games are not big in attendance, although more people attend than in years past.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it. I think that might be the cost difference that is in question and pointing that out.

not to be a jerk, because we don't have a thing now, but the stadium looks awfully budget.

It's supply and demand. But from what I understand, UCF football support was skeletal for awhile as they lost game after game, but then turned around and won something like six games in a row. The fans started coming out as they won, of course, but was half a season enough to justify a 45k seat stadium? It's not like UCF has been packing stadiums for 3-5 years. Then the argument becomes, "well, if we had an on campus stadium, everyone would go to the games." We had the opportunity to prove that during basketball season and did not. Agreed. Although you could argue that basketball attendance and football attendance are pretty different things that are only connected by the university itself. And I do think that basketball has gained in popularity here; I know several people who had no interest in it prior to the FIU games and now can't wait for next season. I also think that the renovation of the Burrow and the rise of the ROwdy Rexes/prOWLers helps. One thing we need to do is connect with freshman as quickly as possible. They will never build a basketball stadium for 1000 fans. We need fan support! I agree.

once we start playing some teams that people have heard of will start to attract more of the community too. We haven't played a descent team at home since Miami, which I don't even count (I'm talking nonconference)

Granted, we're not playing Duke or Georgetown or Ohio State, but North Carolina isn't bad at all! Hopefully we'll be the number one seed in the Sun Belt next year. Carlos Monroe is going to help a lot but it's a bad idea to put all your hope into one player (as Ohio State can attest to, with Oden)

Basketball is on an upswing at FAU. I think we will break all of the attendance records this upcoming season. We have never had the student support like we had last year, and I think that will only continue to grow. That is key. It creates an atmosphere, which is something that has always been missing. To get the attention of our historically apathetic student body you need to make each on campus game an event, and the Rowdy Rexes abd prOWLers are helping to do that. Combine that with the long overdue arena upgrades and FAU basketball will become something that people will want to be part of. Face it, "The Burrow" could be a pretty dark and depressing place to be beacuse of the years of neglect. It had all of the charm of a high school gym. Hopefully $9 million worth of upgrades will change that.
